The Windward Story

The Bradley family has been in ownership of the property
which houses our lodge for over 100 years

A sign reading "Welcome to Island Camps" stands on a dock surrounded by palm trees and sandy beach.
Initially, the property was used for spending family time during holidays. However, in November 1988 Island Camps was opened by Mark Bradley and wife Denise Eiley. There was a communal dining area, an outhouse over the water and tents were the mode of sleeping. As guest dynamics changed and more groups started to stay, they transitioned into building A-framed cabanas and a formal dining room and thatch bar around the early 1990s.

These remained until November 1998 when Hurricane Mitch devastated the island. The only building which remained was the owner’s quarters. Rebuilding began in 1999 and Tobacco Caye Lodge was born. As their family grew larger, Mark decided to relocate to Belize City permanently and eventually leased the lodge to different parties during 2006-2017. Unfortunately, the lodge was not maintained properly by the leasees and the reputation of the lodge fell below standards.

In September 2017, Mark & his son Colin returned to the island to pick up the pieces. On November 30, 2017, The Windward Lodge was registered as a new lodge – with the hopes of a fresh start. Since then, our team has worked tirelessly to create a friendly, cozy, family-oriented eco-tourism lodge – rustic with a modern touch. We have grown into one of the most sought-after lodges on the island as we offer a very unique experience – amazing rooms, delicious food & drinks, and plenty of snorkel adventures to make memories!

My first visit was February. I took a few snorkel tours with Gorlee, she was attentive and informative. The staff was over the top fun and friendly. The food was great, especially the coconut pie. This will be a yearly vacation for me. Loved it so much, I'm going back this April. - Patricia E
